TOEFL Frequently Asked Questions


Can I register in person or pay by cash?
You can register here - you can pay by cash but please contact us in advance. You can also pay by invoice. The easiest way to register is through www.ets.org.

How long before a test can I register?
As soon as registration is open online you can register. You can register up to 5 days before the test or up to 3 days with an additional late registration surcharge.

Can I change my booking?
You can change your booking online for a charge.

Must I have a profile?
Yes, registration can only be done through your personal profile.

What happens if I am ill and cannot take the test?
With a doctor’s note you will be able to reschedule your test. Note that we are not responsible for this in Switzerland you must contact ets in the USA for all concerns.

How long will it take to receive my results?
Results take 15 business days (3 weeks) to be published - they will be published online first and if you have requested a paper version this may take up to 7 days longer to receive. If you have entered score recipients in the system these will be informed as soon as the results are published.

Can I have my results delivered earlier?
No, there is no express service.

Is the speaking test also done on the computer?
Yes, the whole test is done on the same workstation. You will have a headset with microphone and there will be various tests to ensure that everything is calibrated to your voice. The test room may become a little noisy during the speaking session.

How long does the test take?
The test takes 4-4.5 hours. You can work through at your own speed. There is an obligatory 10-minute break in the middle.

Can I eat and drink in the test room?
No - all drinks and food are forbidden in the test room. You will have a 10-minute break when you can eat and drink something.

Can I take extra breaks?
It is possible but if you take more than one extra break this will be registered as a problem report in the system. The time will not be stopped during additional breaks and you may miss a part of the test.
